Who is Jesus? Some Say Elijah

Bible Study Lesson, Luke 9:7-9

Many people from then and now ask the question; “Who is Jesus?” and never find the answer. Some thought Christ was Elijah the prophet. Everyone was just guessing.

Jesus was a mystery to many people in his time on earth. The great King Herod didn’t understand who He was. He had heard disturbing stories of prophets coming back from the dead – including John the Baptist, whom he had killed.

Just as perplexing is the number of people today who are not sure who Jesus is as we will learn in this study from Luke, chapter nine.

Who Is Jesus? – Herod Doesn’t Understand

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again.

Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?”

And he kept trying to see Him.  Luke 9:7-9 NASB

Herod Killed John the Baptist – So Who Was Jesus Christ?

All the people had their own “theory” about who Jesus really was. Herod kept hearing these amazing stories about miracles, prophets risen from the dead, to name a few.

They simply could not accept the fact that Christ was the Son of God so there must be another explanation.

Not John the Baptist

Mentioned in the Scripture reading above, some thought Jesus was John the Baptist, perplexing Herod as he had beheaded John.

Not Elijah

Others brought up the name Elijah, the prophet who ascended into heaven in a fiery chariot without dying.

The majority of the people had it all wrong. The truth was simply too much for them to handle.

In Modern Times …

Today is not much different. There are millions of people all over the world who have heard about Jesus but don’t believe in Him. Even Christians sometimes find it hard to believe that He is human and God in one.

Some religions preach that Jesus was a great prophet, or just a political leader gone radical.

Not All Can Be Explained Away

The witnessed miracles Jesus performed include raising the dead in some instances, feeding 5 thousand people (my favorite), and finally, the resurrection from the cross.

The foundation of the Christian faith cannot be explained away by even those who try to discredit Him.

In fact, the explanations are usually more difficult to believe than the truth.

Who is Jesus?

He is our Lord and Savior who forgives our sins. He blesses us with guidance from the Holy Spirit when we accept. All we have to do is ask him into our hearts.

If you are considering bringing Christ into your life, there is a simple prayer here you can use to show you the way.
