Matthew 27:1-2
Who Killed
Jesus - The Romans or the
Jews?
Matthew
27:1 Now when morning
came, all the chief priests and the elders of the
people conferred together against Jesus to put Him
to death;
2 and they bound Him, and led
Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the
governor.

is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change
the way that we think, and the way that we live.

Jesus is
Condemned
Pilate ruled Samaria and
Judea at the time under Roman authority. Only the
Romans could issue an order for capital punishment
so Pilate had the decision of whether Jesus would
live or die handed to him by the religious
leaders.
Who Killed Jesus? The
Romans or the Jews?
Well, the true answer of
course is .. nobody. God allowed Him to go to the
cross in order to fulfill Scripture and save us
from sin.
The Romans physically put
Christ on the cross but the Jewish leaders were the
true executioners.
They knew that the Roman
government could care less about their charge of
blasphemy against Jesus so had to convince Pilate
of a different charge--one against the Roman
Empire.
For this reason, the leaders
contrived the charge that Jesus was a threat to
Caesar by rebelling and claiming to be a king over
the Jews. Of course, Rome could not allow this, if
it were true.
With all Pilate's faults, his
deceit and basic mistreatment of authority, he
could not find Jesus guilty of any crime against
the throne of Rome. But, we'll cover that point in
the next study lesson.
