Matthew 24:36-51

Jesus Says To Remain Watchful

Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

37 "For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.

38 "For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,

39 and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

40 "Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.

41 "Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left.

Be Ready for His Coming

42 "Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.

43 "But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

44 "For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

45 "Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time?

46 "Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.

47 "Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

48 "But if that evil slave says in his heart, 'My master is not coming for a long time,'

49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards;

50 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know,

51 and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

This is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change the way that we think, and the way that we live.

Commentary by Bob Pardue

When Will Christ Come?

Would you like to know the time of your death? Surveys have been taken on this subject and the large percentage of people asked said no, emphatically.

I would not want to know the exact date.

Jesus, in his infinite knowledge, knew this too. He knew that his followers would wait until the last minute to repent and do his work on earth if they knew when he was to arrive.

It's the same story with us. If we knew the date and time of Christ's coming we would become nonchalant in doing the work needed to bring others to him. We would sit back and relax, pray at the last minute, and take our trip to heaven.

It just doesn't work that way.

We have plenty of work to do on earth and must live out and share our faith with as many as possible before our time comes to either die or see Jesus return.

The Second Coming Of Christ

Jesus says he will come without warning and many people will be caught by complete surprise. Those who do not believe will not be allowed a second chance or be able to bargain for everlasting life.

What a sad thought! This causes me to look back on all the opportunities I've had to tell someone about Jesus' love and missed it. Will those people be part of the ones not taken? If someone else didn't share with them, yes!

Preparation To Meet The Savior

Through this Scripture of Matthew, Jesus is telling us to be prepared by serving and obeying his words today; not for speculating about the date of his return.

So, let's spend more time focusing on God and not so much on the time of Christ's return.

Also, we need to grasp every opportunity to tell others about the good news of Jesus Christ so that they will not be left behind when the time comes.

Come on ... We have work to do!
