Mark 12:41-44
The Widow
and Two Coins (Mites)
Spirit of
Giving
12:41
And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began
observing how the people were putting money into
the treasury; and many rich people were putting in
large sums.
42 A poor widow came and put
in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent.
43 Calling His disciples to
Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this
poor widow put in more than all the contributors to
the treasury;
44 for they all put in out of
their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in
all she owned, all she had to live on."
This
is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change
the way that we think, and the way that we live.

The Spirit of
Giving - Widow's Mite
I once had a Sunday school
teacher say that, many of the richer people, those
putting in large sums of money made lots of fanfare
about how much they gave. It was more of a show
than giving to the temple.
But, when the widow gave her
two small coins (about one cent by today's
standards), Jesus knew what was in her
heart.
True gifts come from the
heart and the spirit in which they are given is
more important than how much. Jesus recognized that
the woman was giving everything she had - money she
could have used to pay for food or
clothing.
Our Gifts
Is Jesus telling us to give
our rent or food money? Not at all. He is simply
pointing out that whatever we give to others, or to
the church, should be given because we want
to - not because we have to.
One Final Thought about
Giving
When we think of giving to
God, most times we think of our tithes or putting a
few dollars in the collection plate. This is the
right thing to do and is welcomed but God also
wants our gift of time and our talents to work for
His kingdom. Let's give back to God now.
