Mark
9:33-37
The
Disciples Argue about Who Would
be the Greatest
Disciple
9:33
"They came to Capernaum. When he
was in the house, he asked them,
'What were you arguing about on
the road?'
-
- 34
But they kept quiet because on
the way they had argued about
who was the
greatest.
-
- 35
Sitting down, Jesus called the
Twelve and said, 'If anyone
wants to be first, he must be
the very last, and the servant
of all.'
-
- 36
He took a little child and had
him stand among them. Taking
him in his arms, he said to
them,
-
37
'Whoever welcomes one of these
little children in my name
welcomes me; and whoever welcomes
me does not welcome me but the
one who sent me.'"
-
This
is the Word of the Lord ... It
is meant to change the way
that we think, and the way
that we live.
Commentary

The
greatest follower of
Christ
- This
passage is very short but
also, very
profound!
-
- We are
very much like those disciples
as we are many times caught up
in our ambitions and
insecurity instead of focusing
on following the examples of
Jesus Christ.
-
- We all
need the security of a good
job or profession and there is
absolutely nothing wrong with
having financial goals to
support ourselves and our
families.
-
- In
fact, God was a worker
himself! If you go back to
Genesis God started off with
creating the world and all the
things in it. This was his job
and he was very satisfied with
the results.
-
- The sin
comes when we let our worldly
ambitions keep us from being
obedient to God.
-
- We walk
a thin line between career
& money goals which give
us position and prestige on
earth, and the decision to
follow Christ and his goal for
us to work in His
behalf.
-
- Jesus
also welcomed children into
His arms. In those days
children were not treated with
much respect so this was a new
idea for the
disciples.
-
- Beloved,
we need to welcome our
children, pray for them, love
them, and teach them more
about the Bible and
Christ.
-
- They
are our future and will play a
large part in the "great
commission" of making new
disciples.
