Mark 3:20-30

Religious Leaders Accuse Jesus of Being Under Satan's Power

3:20 "Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.

21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind.'

22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, 'He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.'

23 So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: 'How can Satan drive out Satan?

24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come.

27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house.

28 I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin.'

30 He said this because they were saying, 'He is an evil spirit.'"

This is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change the way that we think, and the way that we live.

Commentary by Bob Pardue

One of many accusations of Jesus by religious leaders

Jesus' friends and family came to his aid because they thought that he had completely lost his mind. Even members of his immediate family did not comprehend the meanings behind his ministry. They had no idea of what was to come.

Satan does work in this world but only by the permission of God. And, remember that no matter how many deceptions Satan tosses our way, God is still in control.

Jesus has absolute power over Satan because He is God and Satan will one day admit what followers of Christ already know; his ultimate defeat!

A tough pill to swallow is verse 29 when the passage speaks about the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

As Christians, there is no need to worry about that particular sin.

The Scripture passage is talking about giving credit to Satan for the things that God has done.

It means that a person carries an attitude of total unbelief with no concern for repentance.

The only true unforgivable sin is to reject God and the Holy Spirit. To reject Christ is to accept Satan. We can live for one or the other; but not both!

Let's be sure to constantly evaluate our lives and live for Christ who can save us.
