Dr.

Christ
Reading
For The Whole
Family
Asleep in the boat, Jesus is awakened by the
frightened disciples who are caught in a terrible
squall. But, as we study this lesson we find there
may be more to this storm than appears on the
surface.

Mark 4:35-41
Jesus
Calms the Storm
4:35
"That day when evening came, he said to his
disciples, 'Let us go over to the other
side.'
-
- 36
Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along,
just as he was, in the boat. There were also
other boats with him.
-
- 37
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke
over the boat, so that it was nearly
swamped.
-
- 38
Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.
The disciples woke him and said to him,
'Teacher, don't you care if we
drown?'
-
- 39
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the
waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died
down and it was completely calm.
-
- 40
He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so
afraid? Do you still have no
faith?'
-
41
They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is
this? Even the wind and waves obey him!'" his own
disciples, he explained everything."

This
is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to
change the way that we think, and the way that
we live.
Commentary
by Bob Pardue
How Jesus calmed the
storm
The disciples were dealing
with a real storm. The waves were crashing over
their boat and, even though they were experienced
fishermen, this particular storm really had them
scared!
Jesus, on the other hand,
intended to sleep through it all. He was perfectly
calm during their panicky situation.
What does this tell us about
Christ? Don't we
sometimes have "squalls" in our lives? What is
really bothering you right now? Did you know that
Jesus can calm your "storm" just as he calmed the
Sea of Galilee?
The disciples did not have
enough faith and were slow to respect just how much
power Jesus had in their lives.
Let's not make the same
mistake by trying to assume what Christ can do for
us. The next time there's a crisis in your life,
trust that Jesus has enough power to handle it and
to calm your panic ...
He
Does!
Side Note: Something
else of interest in this story brings a new twist
to what we have just read in Mark 4.
If you read on into Chapter
five you'll find that Jesus healed a demon
possessed man on the other side of the lake just
after the storm.
Some believe that the same
demon came out to try to intercept Jesus in the
middle of the lake thus causing the storm.
This may have some warrant if
you consider the violent nature of this particular
storm.
When Christ said "Quiet!
Be still!" He could have just as well be
talking to the demon and not the wind. Something to
ponder, don't you think?
