Dr.
Coleman's Commentary - Learn More About Jesus
Christ
Families
A little bit of doubt can change the thoughts of a
crowd. Jesus teaches us this by way of mentioning
the yeast in these verses from Mark. The lesson
also mentions miracles and whether we, and the
disciples, can still believe.

Mark 8:14-21
Jesus
Warns against Wrong Teaching
8:14
"The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except
for one loaf they had with them in the
boat.
-
- 15
'Be careful,' Jesus warned them. 'Watch out for
the yeast of the Pharisees and that of
Herod.'
-
- 16
They discussed this with one another and said,
'It is because we have no
bread.'
-
- 17
Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked then:
'Why are you talking about having no bread?
-
- 18
Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but
fail to hear?
-
- And don't you
remember? 19
When I broke the five loaves for the five
thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you
pick up?'
-
- 'Twelve,' they
replied.
-
- 20
'And when I broke the seven loaves for the four
thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you
pick up?'
-
- They answered,
'Seven.'
-
21
He said to them, 'Do you still not
understand?'"
-
This
is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to
change the way that we think, and the way that
we live.
Commentary
by Bob Pardue
Jesus talks about wrong
teachings
When Jesus mentions yeast in
these verses, He is referring to the evil taught by
some of the religious and political leaders of the
day.
Just as small amount of yeast
will cause bread to rise, a few false teachers can
put the seeds of doubt into a multitude of
people.
The disciples had experienced
so many of Jesus' miracles such as the feeding of
the five thousand (As for me, this is one of the
most impressive miraculous feats in the Bible) but
they were still slow to believe that He could
repeat the process.
Are we sometimes like the
disciples? Even though Christ has led us through
some of our most hurtful times we are still
skeptical that He can continue to do it in the
future.
Keep your faith and God will
follow through!
