Ask Jesus about Fasting
Bible Study Lesson from Mark
2:18-22
2:18
"Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were
fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, 'How is
it that John's disciples and the disciples of the
Pharisees are fasting, but yours are
not?'
-
- 19
Jesus answered, 'How can the guests of the
bridegroom fast while he is with them? They
cannot, so long as they have him with
them.
-
- 20
But the time will come when the bridegroom will
be taken from them, and on that day they will
fast.
-
- 21
No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old
garment. If he does, the new piece will pull
away from the old, making the tear
worse.
-
- 22
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If
he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both
the wine and the wineskins will be
ruined.
-
No, he pours new wine into
new wineskins.'"
This
is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change
the way we think, and the way we live.

Jesus talks
about fasting
What is
Fasting?
Fasting is an outward sign of
humility and regret for sin, and an inner
discipline that clears the mind and keeps the
spirit alert. (NIV)
Religious
Fasting
While fasting cleans the body
of the effects of food, repentance cleans the body
of the effects of sin. John
and his disciples were fasting in order to be
prepared for the Lord's coming. This was a serious
message so John and his disciples fasted.
On the other hand, Jesus
answered that He (the bridegroom) was already with
his disciples (the bride) so there was no reason
for them to fast at that time.
A Reference to God's
Love
"Bridegroom" is often used in
the Bible to refer to God and the love that He felt
for His people was akin to Israel being His
"bride". Very few people
experience a greater love in life than the love
they feel for their spouse or children. God thinks
of us as both His bride and His children. Knowing
how much God loves you, do you feel that God
deserves your love?
