The Ten Commandments - Number Five

20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you."

This is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change the way that we think, and the way that we live.

The 10 Commandments of God - The Fifth Commandment

In the days of the Old Testament, family was more than just a love for each other; a family was also a means of survival.

Land and property was passed down to children (normally the first born son) and the heir was expected to take care of his parents when they became older.

If unresolved conflict broke out between parents and offspring it could disrupt the chain of continuity within the family and disrupt or destroy the "family business" so to speak.

God was telling the Israelites that they would have to build families and respect authority (parents & elders) in order to live peacefully in the promised land.

We today are not as dependent on our parents and an inheritance as were the Israelites but a strong family is still just as important today.

My parents are gone now and, even though I loved them dearly, I really wish that I would have given them more of my time and respect.

This fifth commandment means that we should speak kindly to our parents, be gentle with them, and respect their advice as long as this advice is not in conflict with God.

If your parents are still living, let them know each day how much you love and care for them. Tomorrow may be too late.

Love in Christ
