Exodus 20:17

The Ten Commandments - Number Ten

20:17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

This is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change the way that we think, and the way that we live.

The 10 Commandments of God - The Tenth Commandment

One dictionary definition of covet is "to wish for longingly" or "desire".

To covet in the commandments doesn't mean just to admire something or someone. It means basically to resent the other person having something that we cannot obtain.

Coveting is sometimes caused by the lack of a basic need in our lives; maybe a feeling that someone else is receiving more attention from others and that is what we really desire.

Psychology may define these resentful feelings as part of an inferiority complex or better known today as low self-esteem.

God, through prayer, can help us through these deep feelings of desire and envy if we just ask Him. God can meet our basic needs and therefore keep the inferiority we feel toward others in check.

I've always heard that "Money can't buy happiness." which is a partial truth.

I prefer to go with the phrase that money can buy happiness for a short period of time but it can't buy joy and contentment.

Only God can give us the gift of joy.

Love in Christ
