5:31
For this reason a man will leave his father and
mother and be united to his wife, and the two
will become one flesh
This
is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change
the way that we think, and the way that we live.

Bond of
marriage
While I was reading this
verse from Ephesians I was thinking that people
seem to take marriage so lightly these
days.
They hastily get involved
with the other person, get married, and then end it
in divorce when everything doesn't go exactly as
planned. The frightening thing is, according to
studies, the Christian divorce rate is almost the
same as the secular world. Why?
Plan the Marriage, Not the
Wedding
There's an old saying that
"many couples today spend more time planning the
wedding than planning the marriage."
But, that's another story.
Relationships
The passage today is more
about the close relationship between a man and
woman and their relationship with the outside
world.
Paul mentioned in a broad
sense the word "oneness" but this does not mean
that a husband and wife must give up their own
individualism and mold into the same person as the
spouse. Not at all.
True Love
This verse (and the ones
preceding) means that you should love your spouse
as much as you love yourself.
Respect
It is almost equal to the
golden rule in that you treat your spouse the way
you would like to be treated. After all, you
wouldn't deliberately do anything to harm yourself,
would you?
Resolving
Conflict
You promised to love and
cherish your husband or wife so remember this vow
when the disagreements arise and count to ten. You
might just find that the basis for the argument was
not all that important to begin with - it just
escalated into something bigger through
anger.
Father Knows
Best
Finally (or should I say
firstly), bring God into the situation through
prayer. It is difficult to remain angry when you
are talking to Him.
God loves you in a special
way; so much that He sent His only Son to die so
that we may live. All He asks of us is that we love
Him and love each other, especially our spouses. Is
that so difficult to do?
