Ecclesiastes 7:1-6

Still Time for Change

7:1 A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth.

2 It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart.

3 Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart.

4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.

5 It is better to heed a wise man's rebuke than to listen to the song of fools.

6 Like the crackling of thorns under the pot, so is the laughter of fools. This too is meaningless.

This is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change the way that we think, and the way that we live.

Commentary by Bob Pardue

Learn from the "Bumps" in Life

Solomon is telling us that we can learn from God during the tough times or "bumps" in our lives. We don't seem to seek God as often when everything is "rosey". It's easy to put off prayer during our busy schedules but we always turn to God when we are having difficult times.

Don't try to avoid all sorrow. Embrace it to learn the lessons in life God has to offer and use it to become a little stronger and wiser.

My pastor once said, "Don't pray for patience because God will give you something to test it.". I believe that we have to experience sorrow in order to claim joy in life.

Death and sorrow causes us to take a second look at our own lives. It lets us know that we are not immortal on this earth so we should use the time we have wisely.

And remember, through Jesus Christ it is not to late to change the way we think and the way we live.
