Ecclesiastes 2:2-6
What Does
Meaningless Pleasure
Accomplish?
-
2:2
"Laughter," I said, "is foolish. And what does
pleasure accomplish?"
3
I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing
follymy mind still guiding me with wisdom.
I wanted to see what was
worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the
few days of their lives.
4
I undertook great projects: I built houses for
myself and planted vineyards.
5
I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of
fruit trees in them.
- 6
I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing
trees.
This
is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change
the way that we think, and the way that we live.
Commentary

Do the Things You have in
Life Bring You Pleasure?
Of all the things Solomon
owned, built, or possessed, none would bring him
real pleasure. And, the Bible tells us that most of
what Solomon built would be later destroyed and lie
in ruins.
It is said that money can't
buy happiness. I'm not sure that I agree wholly
with that statement.
Money can buy happiness; for
a short time. You can be very happy with the new
car, new house, new boat, etc. but the happiness
won't last. The new house will need repairs, the
new car will rust and the new boat will soon sit
idle in the garage.
Money can buy fleeting
happiness but it can't buy pure joy.
Joy is what we receive when
we invite God into our lives and include Him in our
plans.
