Ecclesiastes 12:1

Can the Excitement of Youth Prevent You from Having a Meaningful Life?

12:1 Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,

before the days of trouble come

and the years approach when you will say,

"I find no pleasure in them"-

This is the Word of the Lord ... It is meant to change the way that we think, and the way that we live.

Commentary by Bob Pardue

Excitement and Youth

I don't want to sound morbid but don't know of any other way to say this.

No matter who we are, no matter what our skin color, no matter what our financial status, no matter what our faith or standing in the community, we will all do two things in life which are absolutely certain.

We will either die at a point before we grow old or we will take the other route and grow to a ripe old age.

These facts of life are true and indisputable, wouldn't you agree?

But, for this passage, let's assume that we are to live to become old.

Now we have to consider the fact that we may be alone, suffer from long-term sickness, be financially unstable or even worse, experience all of the above.

Granted, this is a worst-case scenario but all these things are possible.

There is another fact which is certain and that is; a life without God can and will give you a bitter and hopeless old age.

The alternative has a much brighter outcome.

Having God in your life will be joyful and fulfilling.

A life with God will ensure that the time of troubles that occur during life and especially at older ages will be satisfying and bearable because now there is the promise of eternal life to look forward to.

I know that you are most likely busy just as I am but let's take a good look at what we are "busy about".

Are we concentrating on things that God has planned for our lives or are we gearing our lives toward the things that only make us happy here on earth?

Let's give God our strength while we still own it so that we will have the memories of doing some good and the comfort of God when and if we reach old age.

There is an excitement in youth and it's a great feeling to be young but let's concentrate at least a part of that excitement on what God wants of us. Just do it!!
