Decorating for the
Holidays
-
With Christmas being the most
popular holiday in the United States of America,
people are naturally looking for more and more ways
to express their festive spirit and enjoy the
holidays with friends and family.
One of the more popular ways
to do this lately is with Christmas outdoor
decorations. But just like any other project, you
should be considering a couple of key rules and
guidelines. Here are a few guidelines to get your
creative juices flowing.
One of the most important of
my tips for yard holiday decor is size. First of
all, bigger is not always better. Yes, some
displays and Christmas ornaments are quite vast in
scale, covering a lot of ground with lots of led or
flashing lights.
However, these are not always
the best choices. Sometimes big means gaudy,
sometimes big means obtrusive and sometimes big
means obnoxious. Make sure that you have the right
balance for your Christmas decorating
themes.
And it is not just the
overall size of your outdoor decorations that is
important, but also the relative size. What is
relative? Well, it is awful to see your two foot
tall Santa Claus next to a six foot tall deer
across from your mammoth Frosty the Snowman.
Make sure that your
decorations aren't necessarily the same size, but
that the sizes make sense and are within scale of
your tree, shrubs and other ornaments.
Have a Vision and a
Theme
For that matter, some of the
best outdoor Christmas decorations are created with
a unified creative vision and an overall theme.
What does this mean? Well, you wouldn't put a
nativity scene next to Rudolph. That does not mean
you need to limit yourself to only the secular or
the religious, but that you should separate them to
create a cohesive look in your yard.
You might even put up a
different theme for each side of your yard if space
allows. Or, maybe put lights on a tree for
Christmas to cover and balance the decorations on
the other side. The ideas are endless.
As you plan to decorate your
yard or front porch this year, consider these
guidelines. Create a unified display that works on
a thematic level, with all of the decorations to
scale without overwhelming the neighborhood.
I always think it is better
to have a classy Christmas display than trying to
be impressive and over do it. Yes, this might mean
not using all of your outdoor decorations and
ornaments every year, but that is okay.
A good display is just as
much about what you do not put up as what you do
show. A little bit of restraint can go along way to
putting up some truly classy and impressive
Christmas outdoor decorations. Now, get started
with your new decorating ideas and have a happier
holiday season!
